World Health Organization Faces Major Staff Reduction Following US Funding Withdrawal

This international health agency disclosed plans to reduce its staff by nearly a fourth – amounting to more than 2,000 jobs – by the middle of 2026.

Funding Crisis Triggers Substantial Restructuring

The move follows following the US, previously the agency's biggest donor, withdrew financial support previously this period.

The US government had been responsible for about 18% of the organization's overall funding, creating a substantial budgetary shortfall.

Expected Workforce Reductions

Based on organizational projections, the staff is expected to drop from nine thousand four hundred and one positions in January 2025 to around 7,030 by mid-2026.

The reduction of two thousand three hundred and seventy-one posts includes staff reductions, employees retiring, and natural departures.

"The past year was one of the toughest in WHO's existence, as we undertook a challenging but essential process of prioritisation and realignment," commented the agency's leader.

Financial Gap Persists

This Switzerland-headquartered body now confronts a funding shortfall of $1.06bn for the upcoming period, amounting to almost a fourth of its required budget.

The figure marks an improvement from a prior estimated gap of $1.7bn noted in May.

Excluded Funding

These budget projections exclude a further $1.1bn in potential contributions from ongoing negotiations with various contributors.

The spokesperson for the agency stated that the present unfunded portion of the budget is actually smaller than in previous periods, attributing this to multiple factors:

  • Reduced overall budget
  • Initiation of a fresh fundraising campaign
  • Higher in participating countries' mandatory contributions

This restructuring initiative is now approaching its end, paving the way for the organization to progress with a renewed operational model.
